Guill/Gill from Luxembourg

I have written about my Great Grandmother, Eva Guill, who was born and raised in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg. She immigrated to America in 1894 with her mom and siblings. This post will be dedicated to the Guill/Gill Family in Luxembourg as far back as I have been able to research.

1. Eva’s father is Michael Guill. Born 12 April 1845 in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg. He was baptized and his godparents were Michael Gill and Elizabeth Modert.

Michael married on 28 December 1870 in Grevenmacher to Catherine Revenig. Their witnesses were Wilhelm Kahn and Nicholas Lethal.

Michael died 17 January 1881 in Grevenmacher.

He was found on the Luxembourg census in 1846, 1847, 1851. 1852, 1855, and 1861. The 1864 census indicates he was in France beginning April 1863 working as a domestique. He was not on the 1867 census. Michael was found on the 1871, 1875, and 1880 census in Luxembourg with the Revenig family.

Michael and Catherine had 5 children: Eva 1872-1954, Mathias 1875-1876, Nicholas 1877-1958, Henry 1879-1911, and Susanna 1881-1959. Susanna was born after Michael died.

2. Michael Guill was born 7 May 1820 in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg. He was baptized and his godparents were Michael Muller and Anna Marie Daben.

Michael married 18 January 1842 in Grevenmacher to Eva Modert. Their witnesses were Johannes Arens and Paulus Bootz.

Michael died 18 July 1847 in Grevenmacher.

Michael was found in the Luxembourg census in 1843 and 1846.

Michael and Eva had 3 children: Anna Marie 1843, Michael 1845, and Barbara 1847.

3. Michael Guill was baptized March 1773 and his godparents were Michael Gill and Catherine Beck. No civil record of his birth has been found.

No record of Michael’s marriage has been found but was married to Ann Marie Lethal.

Michael died 18 March 1850 in Mehrig, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany.

Michael in found in the Luxembourg census in 1843, 1846, 1847, and 1849. His wife Ann Marie Lethal was on the 1843 census. After his son Michael died in 1847, he was still living with his daughter in law, Eva Modert, and in 1849, Michael was still living with Eva and her second husband, M Donckel. Why he was in Germany when he died, I do not know but M Donckel was mentioned in his death record.

Michael and Ann Marie had the following children: Theodus 1805, Bernardus 1807, Susanna 1809, Marguerite 1811, Salome 1813, and Michael 1820. There is a large gap between Salome and Michael so it is possible some have been missed. Also, there may be children before Theodus but there are gaps in the records around this time period.

4 Petrus Gill was baptized 26 March 1732 in Grevenmacher and his godparents were Petrus Hardt and Anna Barbara. No civil record of his birth has been found.

Petrus married 6 December 1757 in Grevenmacher and his wife is Anna Maria Beck according to a church record. There is no civil record of the marriage.

I have not definitively found his death record. There is one for a Petrus Gill in a church record on 11 April 1778 in Grevenmacher. The problem is the record does not identify his wife. There are no parents mentioned so probably not a child and there is no age. There are no more children born to this couple after this date. Thus far, this is the only Petrus Gill that I have found that may be correct. I have ruled out other Petrus Gill’s based on the name of the wife.

Petrus and Ann Marie had the following children: Nicholas 1758, Elizabeth 1761, Elizabeth 1764, Joannes 1766, Theodus 1768, Salome 1770, Michael 1773, Anna 1775, Petrus 1777.

5. Joannes Gill no civil or church record of his birth.

No marriage record has been found.

Death 7 May 1758 which was found on a church record and names his wife.

Joannes was married to Marguerite Hardt. They are on many records together including his son Petrus’s marriage and the following children: Michael 1728, Petrous 1732, Antonious 1734, Joannes Adamus 1736, Johan 1740, Catherine 1742, and Eva 1745.

I have found two baptism records in 1702 with the surname Gill. They are two different set of parents so unless I can figure out a naming pattern or overlooked any other Gill records, I will most likely not be able to identify which set of parents is Joannes if one set of them is indeed his.

In summary, this is the Guill/Gill line all events in Grevenmacher unless noted next to the date.

Joannes Gill no birth record-1758                          married to Marguerite Hardt

Petrus Gill no birth record- possible 1778             married to Ann Marie Beck

Michael Guill 1820-1847                                         married to Eva Modert

Eva Guill 1872-1954(Chicago, IL)                           married to George Mangen
