Nicholas Mangen 1701-1768

I first found my 6x Great Grandfather, Nicholas Mangen in his son’s baptismal record 10 March 1737 in Bartringen, Luxembourg. This record also provided the first name of his wife, Anna. From this record, I scrolled forward and backward to find more of their children. I have found 11 children:

  1. Dominicus 20 June 1724
  2. Margareta 10 February 1726
  3. Jacobus 26 July 1728
  4. Anna 19 June 1730
  5. Elizabeth 30 August 1732
  6. Magdalena 19 November 1734
  7. Nicholas 10 March 1737-twin
  8. Joannes 10 March 1737-twin * 5x Great Grandfather
  9. Maria 15 July 1739
  10. Dominicus 16 March 1741
  11. Catherine 30 December 1745

Based on the record of the first child, I started looking for his marriage to Anna in 1724. I did find it quickly and it was in 1724. It seems Anna was pregnant when she had her first child 6 months later.

The above record gave me the date of marriage, 9 January 1724, his parents, Nicolai Mangen and Regina, and they are from Kayl, Luxembourg. From this information, I can look for his baptism record in Kayl. What I found is puzzling but I am fairly certain this is Nicholas’s baptism record.

This is showing that on 22 September 1701 The legitimate son of Nicholas Fischbach and Regina had Nicolas sponsored by Nicholas from Bonbrigen and Margaret Feshbach from Kayl. Now there is no surname of Mangen listed here. His mother is Regina Fishbach and his father is Nicholas. When Regina and Nicholas were married, the record indicates that they were married in the house of Fishbach. I suspect that this is where the couple lived and the house name was used on the baptism record. There are no Mangen children born in Kayl between 1677-1746 which is the period that is available in the Kayl records. But, the marriage record for Nicholas indicated he is from Kayl. If he was born in 1701, he would be the right age to marry in 1724.

While looking through the children’s baptism records Bertrange, I found his name in something that I needed translated. A portion of this written account is below.

This part of the section is indicating that Nicolas Mangen was Mayor, Local High Justice. The rest of the record indicates that he is a witness for a person that converted to Catholicism. This occurred in 1747.

This occupation was further reinforced when I found his death record in 1768 in Bertrange.

In summary, Nicholas Mangen was baptized 22 September 1701 in Kayl to Nicholas Mangen and Regina Fishbach. He married 9 January 1724 in Bertrange to Anna Eyners. His occupation was Mayor and he died in 1768 in Bertrange.
