Johann Mangen 1737-1793

I first met my 5x Great Grandfather, Johann Mangen in the marriage record of his son, Mathias in 1794 in Munsbach, Luxembourg. While looking in the records in Schuttrange which is where Munsbach is located, I came across the index for the marriage record for Johann.

The above record shows me a few interesting things. The record is a transcription from another record. He married Catherina Putz on 6 December 1761 in Treveris. I believe Treveris is in Germany just over the border from Luxembourg. This record also reveals that Joannes is from Bartringen so that is where I will need to look for his birth. The actual record for the marriage isn’t in the Schuttrange records but in Treveris (which I haven’t found yet). It was transcribed into the Schuttrange records as seen below.

I have found 10 children that were born to Johann and Catherine in Munsbach, Luxembourg.

  1. Johannes 28 January 1763
  2. Johannes Petrous January 1764
  3. Anna Margaretha 12 August 1766
  4. Mathias 18 March 1769* my 4x Great Grandfather
  5. Elisabeth 27 January 1772
  6. Petrus 21 April 1774
  7. Johannes 13 April 1775
  8. Nicholas 1778
  9. Michael June 1783
  10. Infant male not named 27 March 1785-March 1785

I continued moving forward through the church records in Munsbach and came across his death record from 1793.

The record is in Latin and translated: Johannes Mangen, Mayor and husband of Catherina Putz died in Munsbach at about 4 p. m. on 21 of this month(April was the heading) and was buried the following day. M Braun vicar.

From here, I turned my attention to the records in Bartringen where Johannes was born. I found something exciting. Below is the baptism record for Johannes and his twin brother Nicolaus. It took place on 10 March 1737 and his parents are Nicoli Mangen and Anna.

In summary, Johannes Mangen was born in Bartringen before 10 March 1737 to Nicoli Mangen and Anna and had a twin brother Nicolaus. He was married to Catherina Putz on 6 December 1761 in Treveris, Germany but settled in Munsbach, Luxembourg. He is the father or 10 children and died 21 April 1793 in Munsbach.
