Nicholas Mangen in the Census

Last post provided the information about the birth, marriage, and death of Nicholas Mangen. He was born 27 July 1829 to Jacques Mangen and Catherine Feipel, married 9 April 1861 to Anne Weber, and died 4 September 1907 all in Luxembourg.
Shifting to the census, there were 19 taken between 1843 and 1900 in Luxembourg. Nicholas is on all of them and in the same home in Mensdorf in all but 3. Please see the table I constructed to get an idea as to how the family in one house changed over the 57 years.

The men in brown are my grandfathers and the women in magenta are my grandmothers. The key is:

  •  x shows they were in the home that census
  •  o is they were living elsewhere but I know where
  • d with the date is the year they died
  • o/m shows they were married and out of the house
  • x/m show married and living in the house
  • i is they immigrated to America
  • g is gone and can’t find them

There were other people living in the home at various times but I didn’t include them here. Some were family members that weren’t Mangen’s and I need to find more information and others were servants.

I mainly wanted to concentrate on Nicholas for this post. He was in all of the censuses and in all but 3, he was in this home. The ones he was absent, he was living with his Uncle, Bernard Mangen in Oetrange, Luxembourg which is approximately 10 miles away from his home in Mensdorf. Nicholas was listed as a servant and he most likely worked on the farm there since the kids were young in his Uncle’s home.

The people listed between the two grandmothers in magenta are the siblings of Nicholas. I will devote the next post to them, but you can see that the oldest brother left the home after he married, the one sister that married left the home, two siblings died, and one I have lost track of. Nicholas was the one that stayed in the home with his parents after he married Anne Weber and had children. A 3 generation home is observed in this chart.

It can be seen that 12 of the 14 children that Nicholas and Ann had were annotated on the census.  Two of the children died as infants and never were on the census. Note that their oldest son, Jacques did marry but they never had children. I did not include his wife, Anna Linster on this table but she is listed on the census in 1891, 1895, and 1900. The other children of Nicholas, five of the children immigrated to America, including my Great Grandfather George. Two children died, and the rest, who were women, 2 eventually married and 2 I lost track of.

Nicholas, as an adult was always listed as a laborer or a farmer in the census at this home. They were catholic and according to the 1847 census, he had been living in the home for 17 years 4 months which showed that the family moved to this house when Nicholas was 10 months old. So, with the exception of the years that  he was living with his uncle, Nicholas lived most of his life in one home in Mensdorf where he was raised and then where he raised his family.

I would like to eventually figure out where this home was located. According to a family historian*, Jacques continued to live in the home until his death which I don’t have definitive evidence but is reported to be in 1936. So this death is not verified by me but if someone has evidence and would like to share please comment. Also, the family historian said they toured the home, now owned by another family, and that is was being considered for a historic home classification. I don’t know if it happened and haven’t figured out how to find out yet.

I welcome any comments or suggestions as to how to go about finding this home or at least the location.

Next post will include the siblings of Nicholas Mangen.

*please note, I received typewritten notes on this family from my mom. The author of the family history was not identified by name but wrote that my Great Grandfather, George Mangen, is his/her godfather. So the person was born before George died 7 May 1903. The person traveled to Luxembourg-date of travel was not noted but happened after the death of Jacques and sale of the home.
