Siblings of George Mangen

Great Grandfather, George Mangen was one of 14 children, all born in Luxembourg. Their parents are Nicholas Mangen and Anne Weber. The following is what I have found about the siblings.

Jacques born 9 February 1862. He stayed with the family and must have been the son that inherited the farm. He was married 16 January 1894 to Ann Linster and it seems they didn’t have children. I haven’t found when he died but an undocumented source indicates it is 23 April 1936.

Catherine born 24 December 1863 and died 10 January 1864.

Johann born 6 March 1865 and died 16 April 1865

Peter born 15 June 1866. Haven’t found the first time he immigrated but there is a 1903 immigration record for him that indicated he lived in Milwaukee and he was planning on going to his brother George’s home in Chicago. Several censuses indicate he immigrated in 1890. Peter married Kathrine Wagner 25 April 1905 in Milwaukee, WI. They had 6 children, John 1906-2004, Albert 1908-1973, Margaret 1910-1972, Clement 1912-1913, Anna 1916- and Clarence 1917-2008. He died in 1940.

George -Great Grandfather 25 March 1868 – 7 May 1903. Have written multiple posts just previous to this one about him.

Catherine born 11 October 1869 and immigrated with George in 1888. Married Mathias Ziemet 16 July 1890 in Chicago, IL. They had 4 children, Maria Anna 1892-1900, Margaret 1893-1950 , Edward 1896-1961, and Ernest 1901-1913. Katherine died 16 July 1940 in Chicago, IL.

Maria born 7 September 1871 and immigrated in 1890 to Chicago. Married 2 May 1892 in Chicago, IL to John Jung. They had 3 children: Arthur Henry 1893-1964, Elizabeth 1895, and Elinor 1903. They moved to Racine, WI between 1900(in IL according to census) and 1910. This family is sometime found with the last name spelled Young. Haven’t found death yet.

Jean born 27 September 1873 died November 1888

Elizabeth born 12 April 1875 don’t know when she immigrated but married Theodor Arend 29 September 1897 in Chicago, IL. They had 2 children Clement(born in NJ) 1898-1970 and Peter 1902-1976. Elizabeth returned to Luxembourg briefly with son Clement and came back in 1899 according to the passenger list, to arrive in Chicago to husband Theodor. Elizabeth died 11 November 1953 in Milwaukee, WI(source from Ancestry family tree made by a great grandchild- very confident in this source, also a photo of Elizabeth is on the site.)

Catherina born 24 June 1876. Married Nicolas Wagener 16 January 1900 in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg. According to a distant cousin who wrote a brief outline about the siblings, they moved to Mouzon, France. They had children but there was a question mark. I found Jacob 1902, Nicholas 1905. Perhaps they moved to France after Nicholas since I found no more children. She possibly died around 1952. I only have evidence of the marriage and two children. I have no evidence of the rest of the story.

Susanna born 29 May 1878, died 9 July 1881.

Anna born 23 June 1879 Lost track of Anna. According to the 1895 Luxembourg census, Anna was living somewhere else in Luxembourg but didn’t indicate where. Distant cousin did not include Anna on her list.

Magdalena born 3 July 1882. According to a distant cousin who wrote a brief outline about the siblings, Magdalena(Lena) married a man with the last name of Fournier and had 2 daughters and 2 sons. She lived and died in Luxembourg. I have no evidence yet.

Therese born 28 May 1884. According to the distant cousin, Therese was unmarried and died in Luxembourg. According to the 1895 Luxembourg census, she was living in Belgium. I have lost track of her.

So there was some information written by a distant cousin but some of it is inaccurate and they only included 10 of the 14 children. There are no dates so I think they received this information verbally and did no actual research. They travelled to Luxembourg and met some people. Was able to tour the house the Mangen family lived in even though it is privately owned. They wrote about seeing “the fireplace which Mother described where their meats and sausage were smoked on one of the upper floors”. They owned farmland but lived in the village. There is no indication who wrote this up but they said that she/he was the godchild of George who died shortly after this person’s birth. Most likely the child of one of the immigrant sisters since they wrote in the notes “Mother had a picture of a Mangen that lived to 101.” This person also wrote about how the mother would make some favorite Luxembourger foods: Tripen, Gekochte Kaese, and Quetschen Kuchen. My grandmother, Florence Bostwick who married Henry Mangen, George’s son, made Plum cake(Quetschen Kuchen) that looks exactly like the plum cakes I have looked up. I wonder if she obtained the recipe from someone in the Mangen family. I do have the recipe my grandma used. I am told that all 3 are classic Luxembourg food specialties. Tripen is blood sausage. A hog head and the blood are ground with bread, onions, cabbage, and savory. The mixture is stuffed into casings, boiled and cooked in the oven before serving. There are variations if the recipe.  Gekochte Kaese is cooked cheese which is spread on bread with either butter or mustard.
