Last post covered the death of Great Grandfather, George Mangen, and the mystery surrounding it. George died at the age of 35 in 1903 and he died intestate. I have found a document in the probate records in Cook County, Chicago, IL.
This shows that on 6 January 1904 Nellie Carlin from the Federal Union Surety Company was the administratrix and that John J Fagan, J D Casey, and George W Beck were the appraisers of the estate of George Mangen. That the personal property did not exceed five thousand dollars and Eva Mangen is the petitioner and widow. I haven’t found a final amount that Eva was given. I know that Eva was able to start a confectionary business and that she and their 3 children, Katherine, Nicholas, and Henry lived behind or above the store. Eva’s mom, Katherine Guill, lived with them also.
The mass card is in German. I have some of it translated.
Jesus! Maria! Joseph! A verse from Job 19. A verse from 2 Maccabees 12 verse 46-(loosely translated)- It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. In pious memory of the deceased George Mangen: Born March 25, 1868 in Mensdorf, Luxemburg. Died on May 7th, 1903, age 35, 1 month and 12 days, in Chicago Illinois.
The rest are various prayers that isn’t translated yet.
George Mangen was laid to rest at St Boniface Cemetery, Chicago IL. He is with his infant son, Peter that died 4 months prior.
