George Mangen, Early Years in Luxembourg

In 1867, Luxembourg became an independent country. It is surrounded by Belgium, Germany, and France. At 998 square miles Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Three languages are spoken: Luxembourgish, French, and German.

On Wednesday, 25 March 1868, my Great Grandfather, George Mangen was born in Mensdorf(the town), Betzdorf(the commune), Grevenmacher(the canton), Luxembourg. Below is the top portion of his birth record.

This is in German but between a few helpful people, I have a translation. This is roughly, line by line what it says.

  1. In the year 1868, the 26
  2. the month of March at 7 o’clock before noon before us
  3. Nicolas Erpelding, mayor and officer of the civil office
  4. of the commune Betzdorf, in the canton Grevenmacher, Grand
  5. Duchy of Luxembourg, appeared Nicholas Mangen
  6. 38 years old, farmer
  7. resident of Mensdorf, who presented a male child
  8. born yesterday in Mensdorf at 5 o’clock in the evening
  9. to the declarant and his wife Anna Elizabeth
  10. Weber, 29 years old and without occupation, living in Mensdorf
  11. and who has been named Gregoire

The most important bits are: Gregoire was born 25 March 1868, at 5 pm in Mensdorf, Luxembourg, to Nicholas Mangen, age 38, a farmer, and Anna Elizabeth Weber, age 29, no occupation.

In all other documents in Luxembourg, I have seen his name written Georges. He is the 5th of 14 children spanning from 1862-1884. I will dedicate a future post to naming them and relaying what I have found thus far.

George can be found in the 1871, 1875, 1880, and 1887 Luxembourg census. In 1871 the family consisted of : Jacques Mangen (Grandfather) Catherine Feipel (Grandmother), Nicholas(father), Ann Weber(mother), Jacques (brother), Pierre (brother), George, Catherine (sister), Marie (sister), and Bernard Thome (servant ). They are all Catholic and Jacques and Nicolas are listed as farmers.

The 1875 census include the above family members with the addition of brother, Jean and sister, Elizabeth. Their servant is gone. I am thinking he may have been there to help with the farming until the children could be more help.

The 1880 census include the above family members with the addition of sisters, Catherine, Susanna, and Anna. The brother, Jacques is not listed and I have not found him but he is probably working as a farm hand in another household.

The 1885 census includes the above family members with the addition of Therese. His brother, Jacques is back, but Peter, George, and the older Catherine weren’t there. George would be 15 this year.  I found Peter working as a farm hand in Schuttrange. Also, the grandmother, Catherine Feipel and his sister, Susanna have died sometime between 1880 and 1885.

The 1887 census includes all the living family members and indicates where the adult children are living and working. George is working as a farm hand in Thionsville, Moselle, France which is about 52 km from Mensdorf. The records for this area aren’t online yet. When they do become available, George might be found in a census in France during the 1880’s.

This is as far as this post will go. George is about to set out for a major move.
