Siblings of Henry Mangen

My Grandfather, Henry Mangen had 1 sister and 2 brothers. According to the 1910 census, his mother, Eva indicated that she had 4 children and 3 are still alive. This agrees with everything I have found.

Personal family photo, Shows Eva with children, Catherine, Nicholas, and Henry. Circa 1908

First born is Catherine, 21 October 1897 in Chicago. She was baptized Maria Catherina on 31 October 1897 at St George church. Her Godparents were M Siemet and K Guill(Revenig). Her godfather was Mathias Ziemet(actual spelling) her father, George’s brother-in-law  and the  godmother was her grandmother, Katherine. The record has the name Revenig crossed out and Guill written in. Revenig is Katherine’s maiden name and Guill her married name.

Catherine is listed on the 1900 and 1910 census with her mom, Eva, and brothers, Nick and Henry in Chicago. Then, on 27 May 1916, Catherine married John Hoffman in Chicago. I have’t been able to find a church record for them yet.  She had her only child John Clarence Hoffman Jr on 11 March 1917 in Chicago.

She is found on the 1920 census with her husband and son. The 1930 census has all 3 listed along with her mother Eva Mangen. According to my mom, Eva stayed with them to take care of Clarence while both parents worked. John worked on automobiles and Catherine was a clerk. Catherine is found on the 1940 census with her husband John. I believe Clarence is married and has a daughter named Eva on the 1940 census.

Her husband John died before 16 September 1967 and his burial was on that date in Assumption Catholic Cemetery. The last document I have found is her death. Catherine died 29 June 1990 in Glenwood, IL and is buried in Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Glenwood. I have not found an obituary for her. There is no photo of the headstone.

Second born is Nicholas Eugenius Emil, born 30 December 1898 in Chicago. He was baptized on 15 January 1899 at St George Church. His Godparents were N Guill and M Jung. His godfather is mother Eva’s brother Nicholas and the godmother is Marie Jung who is George’s sister.

He is on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census with his family in Chicago. Nick completed 4 years of High School and entered the Army on April 19, 1917. He was in the Illinois National Guard, 7th Regiment, Company A, Illinois Infantry. According to a newspaper clipping, he was involved in the battles at Somme, St Mihiel, and Meuse Argonne in France. He was discharged on June 17, 1919.

I haven’t found his marriage but I believe it was in 1920 after the census was taken. He married Lillian Ruth West. On 1 July 1921, Ethel Mae Eva was born and on 20 August 1922, Margaret Ruth Mangen was born. On 29 May 1929 there was a stillborn son born.

The family is found on the 1930 census in Chicago where Nick is a salesman. Then on 25 December 1931, Ethel Mae died. My mom was only 4 months older than her cousin Ethel Mae. She  remembers that their Grandma, Eva Mangen made her touch Ethel Mae in the casket to say goodbye. Ethel Mae and her brother are buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery.

The family is found on the 1940 census in Chicago, Nick is a laborer. His wife Lillian died 21 June 1942 and is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Shortly after her death, their daughter Margaret lived with Grandma Eva and Nick re-enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Texas with a rank of Sergeant. He met his second wife, Mrs. Alma Gotcher(nee Williams) in Texas and married her on 10 February 1943 at Tom Green County, Texas. Nicholas lived the remainder of his life in Texas and died 1 March 1975. He is buried in Lawnhaven Memorial Garden cemetery, San Angelo, TX.

Fourth born is Petrus Ludovicus Alphonsus born 9 October 1902 in Chicago. Peter is the only sibling that has a birth certificate. He was baptized on 19 October 1902 in St Michaels church. His Godparents were Petrus Mangen and Susanna Guill. They are his Uncle(George’s brother) and Aunt(Eva’s sister). Peter didn’t live long and he died 30 December 1902, on his brother Nicholas’s 4th birthday. His death certificate indicates he died from bronchopneumonia. He was buried on 1 January 1903 in St Boniface Cemetery. There is no marker for him but he is buried in the same location as his parents.

I don’t know when the photo below was taken but I am estimating late 1930’s to early 1940’s.
