William Davis and Mary Makepeace

My 9x Great grandparents, William Davis and Mary Makepeace settled in Freetown, MA. William is thought to be born 25 June 1653 to William Davis and Margaret Pynchon in Boston, MA. Mary born about 1670 in Boston to William Makepeace and Ann Johnson.

Many researchers believe that William is from Boston and I think that given the Davis, Makepeace, and Johnson families are all from Boston, it is plausible that this William is the son of William and Margaret from Boston. They were all members of the same church in Boston and Mary’s mom Ann Johnson has twin half brothers that were born the same year as William.

William and Mary married 1 Mar 1685 in Taunton, MA. They had 13 children: Rebecca 1687, William 1688, Thomas 1690, John 1692, Abigail 1701, Jonathon 1705, Anne 1706, Remembrance 1707, Joseph 1709, Hannah 1710, Elizabeth 1711, and Ruth.

William’s first deed was in 1688 in Freetown, MA in which he purchased land from his in laws. He was a Grand Juryman in 1697.

William died in 1736 and his will names his children and Mary. I do not know when Mary died and do not know where they are buried.

  1. Our family is also descended from William Davis and Mary Makepeace, but family tradition says William came to the US from Swansea, Wales with a group of early Baptists led by Reverend John Myles. I’ve reached out to the First Baptist Church in Swansea, Mass where they have records dating back to their founding in 1663. Hoping to get clarity on whether our William Davis was among their founding members.
