Edward Chace and Abigail Paine

My 6x Great Grandparents, Edward Chace and Abigail Paine started in Freetown, MA and moved to Walton, NY. Edward, born 1742 in Freetown, MA to George Chase and Mary Strange. Abigail was born in 1744 in Freetown, MA to John Paine and Phillip Strange.

Edward and Abigail were married 26 January 1764 in Freetown, MA and had Avis 1764, John 1765, Edward 1766, Phillip 1768, Walter 1770, Mary 1773, Abigail 1773, and George 1775.

The family can be found on the following US censuses:

1790 Freetown, MA Male-3 under 16, 2 over 16, females -7 I haven’t made sense of this yet.

1800 Walton, NY- males 1 under 10, 2 : 16-26 years, and 1:>45, Females 1: 10-16, 2: 16-26, and 1 >45. Well, the oldest ones would be Edward and Abigail. I know that Walter moved to New York and I believe George also moved to New York which would account for the 16-26 year olds. I haven’t figured out the under 10 male. I haven’t figured out the other females yet.

1810 Walton, NY – males 1:16-26, 1: 26-45 and 1: over 45, Females 1 :16-26 and 1 over 45. The over 45 would be Edward and Abigail. George may still be with them and their daughter Avis died in 1804 so they may have some of her children.

Edward was one of 16 children and most were of age to be part of the Revolutionary War. It turns out, the family was divided and some of the brothers were Loyalists and others Patriots. Edward was a Patriot and served 4 days in 1781(see below). It is hypothesized that the Patriot branch of the family changed the spelling of their surname to Chace to distinguish themselves from the Loyalist branch, Chase. This is the generation where the spelling of the name changed in my branch of the family.

Edward died intestate and his son Walter was designated to oversee the distribution of the estate.

Edward died 29 May 1815 and is buried in Brisack Cemetery, Hamden, NY. Abigail died 26 May 1818 and is buried in Brisack Cemetery, Hamden, NY.
