Walter Chace and Barbara Brown

My 5x Great Grandparents, Walter Chace and Barbara Brown lived in Hamden, NY. Walter born 8 Nov 1770 in Freetown, MA is the son of Edward Chace and Abigail Paine. Barbara is thought to have been born in Hamden, New York on 28 May 1777 parents unknown. There were several families in the area with the Brown surname but the one she came from hasn’t been identified. The birthdate comes from a book that is very detailed with dates but the source of the dates is not disclosed.

Walter and Barbara married 28 Oct 1795 in Hamden, NY. They had at least 3 children: Edward 1797, Harry 1799, Melinda 1803. There may be more that I will expand on in the census section. Barbara died around 1817. Walter married again to Mary Wamsley 4 July 1817 and they had 2 children: Mary Ann 1819 and Julia Ann 1820.

This family can be found on 6 US censuses:

1800- Males:2:under 10, 1:10-16, 1:26-45, Females: 2:16-26. According to names that I have found there may be a son that I haven’t accounted for yet. I don’t know who the other woman is.

1810- Males 2:10-16, 1:16-26, 3:26-45, Females 1:under 10, 1:10-16, 1:26-45. The male children stayed consistent but there was an addition of 2 adult men. Can’t account for them. The young female accounts for the name I have but the teen girl doesn’t fit with what I have.

1820-Males: 1:16-26, 1:45 and up, Females: 2:under 10, 1:10-16, 2:45 and up. I know that their son Edward was married so the other male may be Harry and the other male that I haven’t identified by name is no longer in the household. Walter’s first wife died and his second wife had 2 children that would be the youngest ones but I can’t account for the teen or one of the women.

1830- Male 1:5-10, 1:10-16, 1:50-60, Female 1:50-60. I think that perhaps the marks were placed in the male categories for the children by mistake.

1840- 1 male 60-70, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 20-30. His wife Mary must have died prior to this census.

1850- Walter with his widowed daughter Mary Peake and 3 grandchildren. Walter was 79 and shows he was born in Massachusetts.

In 1798, Walter Chace had a log cabin on 79 acres assessed at $170 and was 32×16. In 1802 his personal property was assessed at $105 and he paid $16 in taxes. In 1826 he was elected to be overseer of the poor. He was selected Justice of the Peace multiple times. Below is his obituary. It is a nice account and further shows that he is from Massachusetts and confirms that his birthday was in November which is the information from the book I mentioned early in this post. Maybe the dates provided in the book are accurate. The final line is interesting: He was much respected in life, and came down to the grave like a shock of corn fully ripe. This is a passage from the bible.

Delaware Gazette, 21 Jan 1852

Walter left a will and the widowed daughter he was living with, MaryAnn Peak received the bulk of the estate. She received the home and land which was 1 acre and the household goods. He left the rest to his other two daughters, Melinda Maxwell and Julia Ann Woodworth. Of note, there was nothing left to his son Edward. His son Harry died in 1842 and according to the 1840 census, Harry had 3 teenagers, 2 sons 1 daughter yet nothing was left to them. He had a farm so it is possible he gave most of that land to his sons.
