My 4x Great Grandparents, Edward B Chace and Julia Goodrich lived in Delhi then Hamden, New York. Edward was born in 1797 in New York to Walter Chace and Barbara Brown. Julia was born in 1798 in New York to Isaac Goodrich and Sarah Merchant.
Edward and Julia married before 1818 and had 8 children: Maryette 1818, Amos B 1820, W George 1822, Betsey A 1825, W Green 1827, John Day 1829, Sarah Jane 1833, and Harriet 1837.
They can be found on the following censuses:
1820 US Census. Also listed on the same page are Walter (Edward’s father), Isaac Goodrich ( Julia’s) father, and Jabez Bostwick (future father in law to their daughter Sarah Jane).

Just a side note for finding this one in the event a cousin finds this and wants to look for the source. I couldn’t find Edward Chase/Chace. So I changed my search strategy and searched the 1840 US Census in Hamden, Delaware, New York. I proceeded to start with page 1 of 16 pages for this town and lucked out because he was on page 1. The person transcribing the form transcribed his name as Base, Edward and looking at it I don’t see the B. Anyway, I was certain he would be there and sure enough he was
1850 US Census Edward, Julia, and daughter Harriet age 13. Edward is listed as a laborer and his son Amos and family are just above listed as a butcher. I mention this as another son of Edward and Julia, John Day Chase moved to California and had a successful Butcher shop there.
They are in the 1855 New York Census but oddly they are living in separate households. Edward is living with a family that thus far I haven’t been able to find the connection. Julia is living with daughter Sarah Jane and her family.
1860 US census, Julia is still living with Jane and her family. Jane’s husband, Jabez Bostwick Jr died during this year. Jane is listed as a Hotel keeper and Julia is listed as a Housekeeper. Edward died in 1859.
1865 NY census Unable to find Julia
1870 census Unable to find Julia
1875 NY census Julia is with Sara Jane again but her last name is House, 76 years and widowed.
1880 US census Julia is still with Sara Jane and her last name is still House, 82 years and widowed.
According to the Delaware County Historical Society, Edward opened an Inn in Delhi in 1815 and opened the Main Inn in 1825 in Hamden. The first town meeting was held there. I wrote a previous post about him regarding a baseball game. There was a notice in the newspaper challenging other teams.
I am unsure when he sold the Inn but by the 1850 census he was listed as a laborer and in 1855 a farmer. He and Julia were no longer living together by 1855. Their daughter Sara Jane wasn’t a widow until 1860 so moving in at least 5 years before her husband died to help with the little ones doesn’t make sense. The youngest child, Harriet, married in 1854 so maybe Julia waited until the last child was out of the home. It is possible Edward was difficult and Julia had enough. It seems that Julia may have remarried since the last two censuses list her with the surname House. I have yet to find her in the 1865 NY census or the 1870 US census. I have tried variations on spelling House and have looked for her at the other childrens’ homes. The mystery remains for now.
As far as being a Colonel, I found one document for Register of Officers whose services terminated prior to Jan 1, 1858. According to the index card, he was a 1st Lieut. in the 9th cavalry, 3rd brigade, 1st division. I looked this up and it only shows me Civil War information, so I need to keep searching. The group that has this information doesn’t know what history book the notation on the index card is directing them to. But, if the book is ever found, Edward’s information is on page 480.
Edward B Chace died 14 January 1859 in Hamden, NY. He is buried in Walton Cemetery, Walton, NY. Julia Goodrich Chase died in 1882. Of note Julia’s tombstone indicates she is the wife of Edward Chace and there is no indication of the surname House that she used at the end of her life. It could just be that the children wanted this on the tombstone. I have not found an obituary for her. They are both buried in Walton Cemetery, Walton, NY. Photos courtesy Pat D.
