My 11x Great Grandparents, George Bower and Barbarie Smythe are the immigrants for this branch of the family. George was born about 1595 in England to Thomas Bower and Werner Minster. Barbara Smythe was born about 1596 in England to John Smythe and Adrian Chadwick.
George and Barbarie married in 1614 in Braithwell, England and had 6 children: Ruth 1616, Benanuel 1617, Matthew 1620, John 1629, Patience 1631, and Silence 1636.
The family moved to America about 1635 and lived in Scituate, MA. George became a Freeman in 1636. They later moved to Plymouth, MA where they lived near the Eel River and purchased 9 acres from Governor Eaton in 1639. He refused to let the other planters move their cattle through his land so a committee was formed to create a path for the cattle to pass through the land that was the least disruptive route for George. He was elected constable in 1638 and was a juror several times. In 1640 he was charged with defamation of the government and was fined 5 pounds. He also set a fence so that a cart couldn’t pass.
In 1640 he was part of a group of men that procured wood to build a jail. In 1641, he purchased 1/16th share in a boat that was to be 40 to 50 tons and estimated price of 200 pounds. See below for the distribution.
The family then moved to Cambridge, MA in 1641/2. Barbarie died 25 March 1644. Their son Matthew died that same year in November. George married again in 1649 to Elizabeth Knowles and they had one child: Jerathmeel 1650. In 1652 he was in court for voting without being a Freeman. He pleaded ignorance as he was a Freeman in Plymouth and did not realize he needed to be a Freeman in Cambridge to legally vote. He was fined 10 pounds.
George died in 1656 and left his estate to his wife and Jerathmeel with provisions for his other sons, Benanuel and John and unmarried daughters, Patience and Silence.
It is not known where either George Bower or Barbarie Smythe are buried.
