Honorable Samuel Sherman and Sarah Mitchell

My 9x Great Grandparents, Samuel Sherman and Sarah Mitchell lived in Stratford, CT. Samuel born 12 July 1618 in Dedham, Essex, England to Edmund Sherman and Grace Makin. Sarah born about 1621 in South Ouram, Halifax, England to Matthew Mitchell and Susan Wood.

He came to America with his father around 1634 where they settled in Watertown, MA. In 1635, they moved to Wethersfield, CT, 1640/41 to Stamford, CT, by 1650 was in Stratford, CT and finally one of the 17 men who founded Woodbury, CT in 1674.

Sarah came to America with her father in 1635 where they lived in Charlestown, MA before moving to Connecticut.

Samuel and Sarah married around 1640 in Stamford, CT and had 9 children: Samuel 1641, Theophilus 1643, Matthew 1645, Edmund 1647, John 1651, Sarah 1654, Nathaniel 1657, Benjamin 1662, and David 1665.

Samuel was elected the magistrate by the General Assembly, Hartford in 1655 and held that position for many years. He held other positions including Deputy and Commissioner. He was on Committees that declared war against the Pequot in 1637 and to watch and guard the coast to prevent the Dutch from invading in 1665.

It has been reported that Sarah died in 1665 but I have not seen the proof of this yet. I am certain that she died before Samuel as she did not receive any of the division of the estate when he died.

On 10 Sept 1700 an agreement to divide lands of our honoured father, Mr. Samuel Sherman, deceased among his surviving children and heirs. His sons, Matthew and Edmund were deceased by this time. He was buried on Toilsome Rd in Stratford CT. His tombstone still stands.
