My 8x Great Grandparents, John Hurd and Abigail Wallis lived in Stratford, CT. According to several books, John was born on 16 December 1663 in Stratford, CT to John Hurd and Sarah Thompson. Abigail Wallis was born about 1670 in Norwich, CT to Richard Wallis and Mrs Wallis.
John and Abigail married 5 January 1692 in Stratford, CT. They had 10 children: Jonathon 1694, Ester 1696, David 1699, John 1700, Ebenezer 1703, Nathan 1705, Jabez 1707. Abigail 1710, Enos 1713, and Ephraim 1715.
Both John and Abigail were named in there father’s wills and they both received land. In addition, John’s brother Isaac Hurd died apparently without heirs so he passed on his land to John. Now it seems that John was a farmer as I don’t see any evidence that he owned the mill in Stratford like his father did. Below is a paragraph about The Hurd Place.
This is a small section of the map of Stratford showing where The Hurd Place is. It is number 87 and is right next to Mill Pond.
John Hurd’s will dated 4 March 1731 names his wife and all of the children. There is a line in there the I haven’t come across before. This is in reference to Abigail and the estate ….what she brought shall not be inventoried. I wonder how much Abigail brought to the marriage? His inventory revealed the titles of books which is the first time I have seen this. They are religious and I have figured out some of them: Husbandmans Callings, Psalm book, Call to the Unconverted, Real Christian. I have found some of those books online. I will try to decipher the handwriting to figure out what the other book titles are.
I have not found Abigail’s will or when she died. Some sources suggest it was in 1728 which is before John’s death and the date of his will. So unless he married another Abigail, I don’t know if this date is true. It may be true if this is a new marriage as a second Abigail may want to keep what she brought to a new marriage. There are no indications that he married a second time. I haven’t found the graves of either one.
