Young Widow with Children – Sarah Jane Chace

My 3x Great Grandmother, Sarah Jane Chace was born February 1832/33 in Hamden, NY. She is the 7th of 8 children born to Edward B Chase and Julia Goodrich. Her parents ran an inn and farmed also. In 1830, her future father in law sued her father for slander and won.
On September 14, 1848, Sarah married Jabez Bostwick Jr. This is his second marriage and he had a son, George who was 7 years old when they married. They had a farm but also ran a hotel.
They are enumerated in the 1850 census with Jabez, Sarah, and George. In 1855 the NY census shows, the addition of son, John Day Bostwick and mother in law Julia Chase. Then, in 1860, Jabez died and was not enumerated on the census that year.  In that census, Sarah used the name Jane, stepson George 18, son John 9, and the first appearance of her daughters, Florence 3, and Hattie 1. Also living with them is her mother Julia aka Jane Chase and 2 of the orphaned nieces of her sister in law (Jabez’s sister), Adeline, 22 and Harriet Woodward, 19 who were now grown. Sarah was listed as a Hotel keeper and now living in Walton, NY. There is a document that settled the estate of Jabez Bostwick who left no will, and named the minors John D age 9, Flora age 3 and Hattie age 1 as heirs and appointed a special guardian to advocate for them for the final settlement of the estate. This was dated 6 July 1863. The 1865 NY census shows that Sarah was 32, married once and a widow. Her 3 children, John 14, Flora 8, and Hattie 6 were living with her. Stepson George enlisted in the Civil War and thus wasn’t living with them anymore. The 1870 census shows Sarah with only her daughters. My 2x great grandfather John, must have moved to California around 1870 because I cannot find him on any census.

1865 NY census

Then I lost track of  Sarah. I decided to try to find Sarah through her daughters and sure enough, she was found on the 1875 NY census. Sarah had remarried and her last name changed but fortunately the census indicated the daughters surname as Bostwick. Her new husband, Robert Launt, was 14 years older, a widower, and had 3 grown children. Of interest, the census indicates the Sarah owned the land they lived on. They were on the 1880 census daughter Hattie was still living with them and her mom Julia Chase was back. Robert was a Saloon keeper. Her mom, Julia died in 1882 and then in 1892, Robert died living Sarah a widow again. The will gave Hattie Bostwick 100 dollars for being a devoted stepdaughter and the rest of his estate went to his 3 children. I am assuming Sarah had enough money and land to take care of herself.

Sarah is then found in the 1900 census living alone. It indicated she was born in February 1832, had 3 children, and owned her home in Walton, NY. I have been unable to find her in the 1910 census and thought I lost her again. But, she showed up on the 1920 census using the name Jane Launt and living with her daughter, Florence Townsend and her husband John, a dairy farmer, and son Howell, 38 years old, and a vice principle. It seems Sarah Jane has now given up her home. In 1925, Sarah can be found again in the NY census, still living with her daughter’s family and she is now 93 years old.

Sarah Jane Chace Bostwick Launt died February 7, 1927 in Walton, Delaware County, NY. She is buried in Walton Cemetery and note the tombstone, it has all of the surnames she used and the name Jane was engraved even though of the 10 censuses she was found on, Sarah was used 8 times. Would they have used her first name or middle name on the tombstone? I’ll have to keep searching to see if I can solve that mystery. I believe there is a will but I will either have to write to have it sent to me or even better, plan trip to the area and request it in person. Also, I was certain I had her obituary but while writing this, I can’t seem to find it. I must have lost it and no longer have newspaper access right now so will put that on my to do list.
