Currence Hard What is the Secret to a Long Life?

My 5x Great Grandmother, Currence Hard was born 21 March 1753 in Newtown, CT. Her parents were Abner and Hannah (Beers) Hard and she is the 5th of nine children.

Birth under heading Hard

Currence married David Bostwick around 1775 and they had 10 children: Ammon 1776-1835, Jabez 1778-1856, Betsey 1780-1835, Ezra 1783-1819, David 1785-1871, Currence 1788-1811, Lucy 1790-1865, Abner 1793-1831, Mary 1796-1830, and Abel 1797-1861. The family moved to Meredith, NY in 1793.

Her father, Abner Hard, died in 1785 and named Currence in his will. He left each daughter 45 pounds and in a another part of the will they and their mother are to divide up the furniture.

It looks like she received 100 acres of land also.

The family can be found in the 1790 US census in Connecticut and in the 1800 and 1810 censuses in New York. Her husband David died in 1818 and so far I have not found his will or probate. I believe Currence is living with her daughter Mary and son in law, Samuel McCall as the 1820 census reveals a woman over 60 years living there. All the other children I found in that census do not have a woman over 60 living with them. It appears she is living with her son David in 1830 as this is the only home that has a woman between 70 -80.  Then the 1840 census shows a woman between 80-90 still living with David Bostwick. The 1850 census finally names everyone and there is a Currence, 97 years old, female, born in Connecticut living in the David B Bostwick household. There was an 1855 NY state census taken and Currence is living in the David A Bostwick household which is her grandson. She is 102 years old.

Currence Hard Bostwick died 23 October 1855 in Franklin, NY. Her obituary is in the Delaware Gazette, rich with information. The last line: “Few hereafter will, comparatively speaking, ever see a living centenarian.”

She is buried in West Meredith Cemetery, Meredith, NY. I had the honor of visiting her grave in 2015.
