Jabez Bostwick Jr Had a Short Life

My 3x Great Grandfather, Jabez Bostwick Jr was born 5 December 1821 in Hamden, NY to Jabez and Freelove (Frisbee) Bostwick. He was the youngest of 4 children.
Jabez Jr married Laura Montfort 24 October 1839 and they had 1 child, George 1840. Laura died 7 February 1847. They lived on a farm in Hamden, NY. Jabez remarried 14 September 1848 to Sarah Jane Chase. She is the daughter of Edward and Julia (Goodrich) Chase. Jabez Jr’s father sued Sarah’s father for slander in 1830. I shared the news clipping in my previous post. Jabez and Sarah had 3 children: John Day 1851, Florence 1857, and Hattie 1859.
The family can be found on the 1850 US census and the 1855 NY census.

Of note, Jabez’s occupation is listed as a farmer but they also ran a hotel as can be seen in the left margin written sideways. Along with Sarah, others living in the home are his son George from his first wife, son John, mother in law Julia Chase and another farmer Peter Launt. I haven’t yet figured out how Peter figures into this but what I do know is after Jabez Jr died, Sarah remarried a man named Robert Launt who was 14 years older than her.

Jabez Jr can be found on the 1850 Agriculture census. His father Jabez and his brother Marcus were also found in this census and their farms were in the same town and close together. Below, I transcribed the 3 farms to illustrate what each farm was producing.

As can be seen, Jabez Jr’s farm was smaller so I am assuming they supplemented their income by running a hotel also. Sarah’s father was an innkeeper and her mom was living with them so it appears they had experience running a hotel.

In 1853, Jabez Jr was the postmaster for the town of Hamden, NY

Delaware Gazette June 8. 1853 p2.

Also in August 1853, he was elected to the Town Committee for Hamden, NY.  It appears he was also a Freemason as he has that symbol on his gravestone. Although his membership is not verified, there was a masonic hall in Delhi, NY which is next to Hamden. It is Delhi Lodge no. 439 and was started July 2, 1857. I will need to look into contacting the Grand Lodge in New York to see if they have documentation of his membership.

Jabez Bostwick Jr died 28 May 1860 in Walton, NY. This is curious as his farm was in Hamden. He died before the census was taken so he is not enumerated in the 1860 US census but his widow is along with their children and she is running a hotel in Walton. At some point between 1855 and 1860, they moved. He is enumerated on the Special census Mortality Schedule in 1860 for the Town of Walton.  It shows he was 42 years old, born in New York, died in May, his occupation was a Hotel Keeper, the cause of death is Complications of Disease and number of days he had this was 6. Quite a vague cause of death. Someone that age I could speculate perhaps he had some sort of chronic illness that didn’t have the treatment options that are available now. From evaluating the other causes of death on the page, anyone that had an infection the specific infection was noted so I would think that wasn’t the cause. Below is the obituary.

Deleware Gazette May 30, 1860 p3

Jabez Jr died intestate and his widow Sarah Jane Bostwick, his brother Marcus Bostwick, and a neighbor, Walter Wood were the administrators of the estate. There is a document that settled the estate and named the minors John D age 9, Flora age 3 and Hattie age 1 as heirs and appointed a special guardian to advocate for them for the final settlement of the estate. This was dated 6 July 1863. His son George, was 17 when Jabez died leaving him orphaned. George was enumerated with the family in the 1860 census but ended up joining the Civil War for the Union soon after and I wrote about him here.

Jabez Bostwick Jr is buried in the Bostwick Cemetery in Hamden, NY next to his first wife Laura.
