I’ve been working on my maternal grandmother’s branch of the family and want to dedicate the next few posts to the Bostwicks. I am going to concentrate on the immigrants to America on down to my Grandmother. There is a book called Genealogy of the Bostwick Family in America: the descendants of Arthur Bostwick by Henry A Bostwick published in 1901. This book gave me a great start in figuring out the line to my 2x great grandfather. I knew the history from him to my grandmother from family oral history. I was able to find information to verify the generations that are contained in the book. Here is the branch (please note that the * next to the wife’s name indicates the mother of the next generation)
1 Arthur Bostock/Bostwick (1603-1680/81) married 1 Jane Whittel* and 2 Ellen Johnson. Emigrated around 1639 from Taporley, Cheshire County, England.
2 His son John Bostock/Bostwick (1638-1688) married Mary Brinsmead. Unknown when he emigrated, perhaps with his dad from Taporley, Cheshire County, England.
3 Their son John Bostwick (1677-circa 1747) married Abigail Walker. He was born in Stratford, CT and died in New Milford, CT.
4 Their son Joseph Bostwick (1695-1756) married Rebecca Wheeler. He was born in Stratford, CT and died in New Milford, CT.
5 Their son Joseph Bostwick (1728-1808) married 1 Betty Hurd* and 2 Ann Hurd. He was born in New Milford, CT and died in Upper Merryall, CT.
6 Their son David Bostwick (1752-1818) married Currence Hard. Born in Upper Merryall, CT and died in Meredith, NY.
7 Their son Jabez Bostwick (1778-1856) married Freelove Frisbee. Born in Stratford, CT and died in Hamden, NY.
8 Their son Jabez Bostwick Jr (1821-1860) married 1 Laura Montfort and 2 Jane Chase*. Born in Hamden, NY and died in Walton, NY.
9 Their son John Day Bostwick (1851-1921) married 1 Ida Shelby* and 2 Delphina Valencia. Born in Hamden, NY and died in Capitola, CA.
10 Their son Charles Jabez Bostwick (1878-1957) married 1 Alpha Wilkins* 2 Della Plasterer and 3 Edna Barnhart. Born in Soquel, CA and died in Inglewood, CA.
11 Their daughter Florence Irene Bostwick (1902-1996) married Henry Mangen. Born in Chicago, IL and died in Tucson, AZ.
How nice to have a family genealogy book from so long ago!

It is a huge help. I didn’t know it existed until I started researching. It has wills and maps and led me to other books that have land and court records. It also has a sketch of the line in England back to 1080. A lot more to delve into.

In looking through my reader today the name Bostwick caught my eye. I just returned from Ga and near my mom is Bostwick GA and many Bostwick families there. I had even stopped in the small town to check out their cem and many buried there. By chance does any of your lines stretch to ga?

I have seen that town and wondered the same thing. If I am related they are distant relatives and I haven’t gotten to the point of expanding that far yet. My line moved to California. Thank you for your comment.
